Before we go any further we will remove both the crankshaft protection mushroom and the woodruff key that locks the flywheel to the crankshaft. This part is more in preparation for removing the generator housing itself but whilst we are removing the stator it is a good idea to remove the woodruff key in case it accidentaly gets dislodged. Note that the generator housing can be removed with the stator still mounted in place ...

Note that the coil earth return leads are earthed to the chassis via these bolts. It is important that these connections are cleaned and have a very small amount of dielectric paste applied to guard against corrosion and therefore poor earthing ...

There should now be nothing preventing the stator assembly from being removed from the generator housing if needs be. The wiring loom can be eased through the opening in the side of the generator housing. On this particular rebuild there was no reason to completely remove the stator assembly so in the interests of minimising handling of delicate electrical cabling the cabling was left in place ...
